How to fix bare patches in your lawn
Bare spots from pet urine, foot traffic, or disease can be fixed in a few weekends. Here's the step-by-step process and what to buy.
Bare patches in your lawn are easier to fix than they look. Find out what caused the patch, scratch up the soil, drop fresh seed or a patch of new turf in, water it gently every day for two to three weeks, then ease back to normal. Most bare spots are gone in a month if you do it right.
Why did the patch appear?
Fix the cause first or the patch will come back. Walk the spot and look for these signs:
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Round dead spot near where the dog goes | Pet urine |
| Worn track where people walk a lot | Foot traffic / compaction |
| Irregular dead patches that spread fast | Fungal disease |
| Dead patches under tree branches | Too much shade or low water |
| Bare strips where the mower goes | Scalping (mowing too short) |
| Spots that stay soggy | Drainage / overwatering |
| Patches you can lift like carpet | Grub damage |
If you don't fix the cause, you'll be re-seeding the same patches every season. Pet urine spots come back. Grubs eat new seed too. Shade kills sun-loving grass twice.
Step 1 โ Prep the soil
You can't just throw seed on a hard dead patch and expect it to grow. Seeds need soil to root into.
Here's what to do:
- Rake out the dead grass. A spring-tine rake or wire rake works. Scratch hard until you see bare soil.
- Loosen the top 2-3cm. Use a hand fork or the end of a rake. Break up any crust.
- Remove debris. Pull out old roots, stones, and clumps.
- Add a thin layer of topsoil or seed-raising mix. About 1cm deep. This gives the seed something soft to root into.
- Rake it level. You want a flat surface, not a crater or a mound.
If the spot was from pet urine, water the area heavily first to flush salt out of the soil. Soak it. Let it dry for a day. Then prep as above.
Step 2 โ Pick the right product
You've got three options:
Option A โ Seed
Cheapest. Slowest. Works for most grass types except buffalo, kikuyu, and couch which don't grow true from seed.
Best for: tall fescue, ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, bent, some zoysias.
Look for:
- AU/NZ: Yates Lawn Patch Magic, Munns Professional Lawn Repair
- US/CA: Scotts EZ Seed, Pennington 1 Step Complete
- UK: Miracle-Gro Patch Magic, Westland Patch Fix
- ZA: Mayford Lawn Repair Mix
These "patch repair" mixes usually combine seed, mulch, and a starter fertiliser in one bag. Easier than buying each separately.
Option B โ Sod / turf plug
Fastest. Most expensive. Works for any grass type โ match what you already have.
Buy a roll or a small patch from a turf supplier. Cut it to fit the bare spot. Press it down firmly. Water heavily for two weeks.
Option C โ Runners (for warm-season grasses)
If you have buffalo, kikuyu, or couch, you can dig up small runners from a healthy spot and replant them. Free, but only works for grasses that spread sideways.
Dig a few runners (long horizontal stems) from a thick patch. Press them into the prepped soil. Cover lightly. Water daily. They'll root in 2-3 weeks and start spreading.
Step 3 โ Cover and water
After dropping seed or laying turf:
- Cover seed with a thin layer of topsoil or seed-raising mix (about 5mm โ just enough to hide the seed from birds).
- Press it down lightly. Walk over it or use the back of a rake.
- Water it gently โ a fine spray, not a blast. A blast washes the seed out.
- Keep the top of the soil damp for the first 2-3 weeks. That usually means a light watering every morning. Maybe twice a day in hot weather.
The biggest mistake people make at this stage is letting the seed dry out. One missed watering on a hot day kills the lot. Set a phone reminder.
Step 4 โ Slow back to normal
Once the new grass is 5-7cm tall (about 2-3 weeks for most seed mixes, longer for slow types):
- Drop to watering every other day, but soak deeper.
- Wait until it's at least 5cm tall before the first mow.
- Keep the mower high (top 2-3 settings) for the first three mows.
- Skip walking on the patch until it's fully filled in.
After 6-8 weeks the patch should blend in with the rest of the lawn. Spread a balanced fertiliser at this point to help it bulk up.
Fixing pet urine spots specifically
Pet urine deserves its own section because it's the most common cause and people get it wrong all the time.
The yellow dead patch is from the salt in the urine, not the urine itself. You can't just throw seed on top โ the salt is still in the soil and it'll burn the new seed too.
The fix:
- Soak the spot with the hose for 5-10 minutes. Heavy water flushes the salt down past the root zone.
- Wait 24 hours. Let the spot dry out.
- Soak it again. Yes, twice.
- Now rake out the dead grass and prep the soil as above.
- Seed or plug, then water gently.
- Train the dog away from the patch while it grows in. Move their normal toilet spot to a mulched corner.
The earlier you flush a fresh urine spot, the less damage you get. If you can dilute it right after the dog goes, you might prevent a dead patch entirely.
Best season for patching
Spring and early autumn are best for most grasses. The weather is mild, the rain is steady, and seedlings have time to root before the next stress season.
| Season | Patching verdict |
|---|---|
| Spring | Best โ warm soil, regular rain, fast growth |
| Summer | Tough โ high heat means lots of daily watering |
| Autumn | Great for cool-season grasses (fescue, ryegrass) |
| Winter | Skip โ most seed won't germinate in cold soil |
Don't bother patching in the dead of winter. The seed won't grow until the soil warms up. Wait for early spring.
Frequently asked questions
How long until the patch fills in completely?
About 4-8 weeks for seed, 2-4 weeks for sod, 6-12 weeks for runners. Faster in warm wet weather, slower in cool or dry.
Can I just throw seed straight on the bare patch?
No. Birds will eat it, wind will blow it, and what's left won't root into hard soil. Always scratch up the surface first and cover the seed lightly.
What if I don't know my grass type?
Cut a small piece of healthy lawn and bring it to a garden centre โ they can usually ID it. Or use Lawnova to identify it from a photo. Match the patch repair product to the grass type.
Why is my new grass dying?
Almost always one of two reasons: it dried out (water more often), or you mowed it too early (wait until at least 5cm tall and keep the mower high).
Do I need to fertilise after patching?
Yes, but wait 6-8 weeks first. Fresh seed can't handle strong fertiliser. Most patch mixes have a small amount of starter feed in them already.
